What is Coworking?

Coworking has been around in some form for as long as offices have existed. The word coworking is the use of an office or other working environments by people who are self-employed or working for different employers, sharing equipment, ideas, and knowledge.

According to our research, within the next five years, at least 40% of the American workforce will be independent freelancers, consultants, and entrepreneurs. Even those who are part of teams now have the freedom to choose where, when, and how they work. The coworking movement – with its dedication to our shared values of collaboration, community, accessibility, and sustainability – evolved out of the needs of this rapidly growing group of people.

In early 2015, The Global Coworking Unconference Conference and Small Business Labs/Emergent Research surveyed regular and occasional coworkers across America:

  • 89% of respondents said they are happier because they cowork
  • 84% said they are more engaged and motivated
  • 83% said they are less lonely
  • 82% had expanded their professional networks by coworking
  • 80% had turned to fellow community members for help & guidance
  • 78% said coworking helps them maintain their sanity
  • 69% had learned new skills
  • 69% felt more successful
  • 64% said their coworking network is an important source of work

What is a shared workspace?

Shared Workspace and Collaborative Workspace are both open spaces intended to foster creative problem solving within a group. Coworking is a natural fit for these kinds of spaces, and we want to provide opportunities for all types of work within Halcyon Works.

Do I have to sign a lease agreement?

No. Halcyon Works is Membership-based only. Members should read and accept our Respectful Use Policy terms.

Who is the typical Halcyon Works Member?

Each of our members has chosen to work alongside and connect – in and outside of our office – to improve ourselves, our businesses, our community, and our city. Beyond that, we represent all ages, genders, backgrounds, and industries. We currently have a wide range of entrepreneurs and companies using our space, and you can learn more about them in our Culture section of our website.

What are the access hours for each Membership Type?

Our Halcyon Works staff attends to our members. We provide a full-service receptionist, Monday-Friday from 9 am – 5 pm. Halcyon Works is accessible 24/7 to Locals.

How will I be billed?

We will invoice you for your membership on a month-to-month basis.  Your membership can begin on any day of the month, and that will be your bill date moving forward. Credit card subscriptions are processed online or in-person via Paypal or Square.

May I schedule a tour?

Absolutely – contact us to schedule a tour anytime between 9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Overflow parking is available in the adjacent east lot. If you’re not familiar with our location or nearby parking, view our map.

Can I book one of your conference rooms?

Use of our meeting rooms is limited to registered members. It’s just one of the many perks of membership. We recommend registering for Community Membership and adding on conference time.

How do I become a Halcyon Works Member?

  1. If you haven’t stopped by for a tour, we highly recommend doing so.
  2. Like us? Perfect! Visit our membership system to sign up, choose your plan, and fill out the form to pay.
  3. On your first day as a member in the space, you will need to accept and sign our Respectful Use Policy. Also, set aside about 10 minutes for an orientation tour. We’ll show you where to find supplies, how to book meeting rooms, set you up to use the printer, and more.

How do you handle cancellations?

We ask that members give us at least one week’s notice for cancellations.

How’s the internet connection?

All memberships include access to our AT&T Fiber wifi.

Our network is managed and monitored by Founding Member, Tim Cooper of CooperHouse. Contact him with any questions you have regarding connection.

As a member can I have visitors stop by?

Absolutely! Halcyon is your office, and we want you and your guests to feel at home.

We trust that you’ll know when your visitor has crossed over to guest coworking. If someone is using many of our resources, he or she should become a Community Member – giving them all the sweet perks associated with doing so. Memberships are what keep Halcyon Works alive and thriving.

I am on the phone a lot.  How does that work?

You are free to make and take calls at a respectful volume in our open areas – we like a little productive background noise around here. If you need privacy, our phone booth is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. We’ve noticed that “walk-and-talkers” like to pace the library or sidewalk outside. You’re also welcome to schedule a meeting room.

What are some of the benefits of coworking?

Coworking is a great way to collaborate across industries and get connected with people who can help your business thrive. Sometimes getting out of the house is excellent for productivity and being in a space devoted to work can help keep you more focused and on-task. It’s not always feasible to bust out that important presentation with kids or pets or renovations or whatever other distractions life throws at you. Having space without a ton of distraction is one of the keystones of coworking.
 One of the most significant benefits of coworking is that you can learn a lot from the people that share the office with you.

Do you host member events?

We sure do! We have monthly programming events designed for our members that range from business education and networking to cultural and social events.  If you have an event you’d like to plan with us, please let us know! We’re always looking for new ways to engage our community and help it grow.

Whose art is hanging on your walls?

The art in our space rotates seasonally.  Inquire with Erin Cooper if you’d like more information.

May I hold an event or meeting at Halcyon?

You must be a registered member with Halcyon Works to rent our space or conference rooms.  One of the many perks of becoming a Local is one free event per year.

What does Halcyon Works name mean?

Our name derives meaning from the word “Halcyon” which means both serenity and calm, but also “ a prosperous time” and the word “Works” is often used to refer to a forge, a place where talented people craft beautiful things.

The logo is a Halcyon bird, also known as a Kingfisher. We based our logo on the Myth of Halcyon, found here in Wikipedia.

“Ovid and Hyginus both also make the metamorphosis the origin of the etymology for “halcyon days,” the seven days in winter when storms never occur. They state that these were originally the 14 days each year (seven days on either side of the shortest day of the year[5]) during which Alcyone (as a kingfisher) laid her eggs and made her nest on the beach and during which her father Aeolus, god of the winds, restrained the winds and calmed the waves so she could do so in safety. The phrase has since come to refer to any peaceful time. Its proper meaning, however, is that of a lucky break, or a bright interval set in the midst of adversity; just like the days of calm and mild weather are in the height of winter for the sake of the kingfishers.”
